A horror-comedy about a haunted manor just made $3.2 million in its opening weekend.
The figure marks the total earnings for Lionsgate U.K.'s film Ghosts: The Possession of Button House in the U.K. and Ireland. The movie held the number one position on the regional box office chart for the three-day period ending Sunday.
The top slot came with a specific financial result that set a pace for the week. The studio reported a take of £2.4 million from local ticket sales. That amount translates to $3.2 million in U.S. currency.
The debut performance placed the film ahead of major studio releases. Warner Bros. pushed its DC thriller Clayface into the second position. That title collected $2.6 million during the same span.
Amazon MGM Studios held the third place in the rankings. Its comedy film Ali G: Who Iz I? generated $1.7 million for its opening session.
The middle of the chart saw a close race between animated and live-action features. Black Bear's animated fantasy Wildwood, directed by Travis Knight, took the fourth spot. It earned $1.36 million in its first outing.
Paramount's Street Fighter fell to fifth place in its second weekend. The film added $1.35 million to its total. That push lifted its cumulative earnings to $5.6 million for the region.
Universal's animated film Forgotten Island ranked sixth in its second session. It collected $1.2 million, bringing its total to $3.7 million.
Sony's psychological thriller Verity sat in seventh position during its fourth run. The movie added $857,067 to its bank. That figure pushed its running total to $14.4 million.
The list continued with Universal's Other Mommy in eighth place. The film earned $576,822 for a cumulative gross of $6.2 million.
Mubi's drama Fatherland debuted at number nine on the list. It generated $264,083 from 86 locations over the weekend. That performance created an average of $3,144 per screen.
The per-site average marked the fourth highest among new releases. Including preview showings, the drama's total opening reached $415,017. That number made it the biggest launch for director Pawel Pawlikowski in the territory. It surpassed his earlier work Cold War in that market metric.
