Joe Bachetti has replaced Gary McNamara as mayor of the Town of Tecumseh. The election held Monday night ended a 35-year run for McNamara in municipal office. Unofficial results show Bachetti received 7,017 votes, while McNamara tallied 2,704.

McNamara first entered local politics in 1991. He served on council before becoming deputy mayor in 1998. He assumed the mayoral role in 2003 and held the position for 22 years. Bachetti served as deputy mayor for the 12 years prior to this election. He also held a seat on council for 20 years.

Bachetti described the voting outcome as phenomenal. He said the numbers represent neighbors, families, and friends. He stated he wants to return the town to a level where people feel welcomed. He explained his approach involves answering phone calls, visiting sites, and providing solutions. He noted that residents may not always be happy with the answers but should see that he tried.

During his campaign, Bachetti said he felt support from residents. He recalled instances where people declined campaign flyers because they had already decided to vote for him. He said he would continue to show up for the community.

McNamara said he is proud of his 31 years of service. He acknowledged disappointment in the final numbers but congratulated Bachetti on a hard-fought campaign. He wished the new council success in moving the community forward. He plans to take some time to travel with his wife and spend more time with his children and four grandchildren. He added that he still has energy for future endeavors.

Tania Jobin won the race for deputy mayor. She received 5,773 votes, while Larry Morand finished second with 3,558 votes. Five candidates won seats on council. Incumbent James Dorner received 1,594 votes. Darrin Drouillard received 1,370 votes. Chris Elliott received 1,213 votes. Cheryl Hardcastle received 781 votes. Marisa Nabbout received 737 votes.

The Municipal Clerk will certify the results on Tuesday, October 27. Until that certification, all vote counts remain unofficial.
