After World Cup Glory, Lamine Yamal Targets Historic Ballon d'Or

The 19-year-old Barcelona and Spain winger believes his World Cup and La Liga double makes him worthy of football's most prestigious individual prize, with the winner to be named at a ceremony in London on Monday.

Lamine Yamal has already won a World Cup and a Spanish league title before turning 20, and now the Barcelona winger wants football's most prestigious individual honour as well. Victory at Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London would make the 19-year-old the youngest winner in the award's 70-year history. No teenager has ever claimed the prize.

Yamal's case is built on a rare double. He lifted the FIFA 2026 World Cup with Spain in North America only days after his 19th birthday, a success that came on the back of Barcelona's La Liga title triumph. He was also part of the Catalan club's Spanish Super Cup-winning squad.

An injury-marred season meant his World Cup debut produced just one goal and one assist, but his club form was outstanding. The winger racked up 22 goals and 15 assists in 38 league appearances, playing a major role in Barcelona's successful title defence.

Bookmakers rank him among the top three contenders alongside Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe, in what is considered the closest Ballon d'Or race in decades. Yamal has publicly framed the contest as a two-man duel. “For me, Mbappe and me, we're the two best players in the world,” he said in an interview on Movistar Plus. “I honestly think that, as the best in the world, maybe there are two of us, and this year I would deserve it because of what I've won.”

Such self-promotion is a relatively recent development in a team sport where the top individual prize once went largely unnoticed until it was time to present it. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said he would have preferred Yamal not to speak about the award, but accepted it as part of the winger's self-belief. “He's exceptional, and it's a part of this,” Flick said. “He has self-confidence; he wants to win the Ballon d'Or.”

The ceremony is set to revolve around a three-way battle spanning three stages of a career: one contender in his teens, one in his 20s and one in his 30s. On individual statistics, Yamal's rivals hold the edge. He recorded 25 goals and 20 assists for club and country, while Mbappe, 27, produced a staggering 58 goals and 13 assists, finished the season as top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League, lifted the World Cup's Golden Boot and broke the all-time goals record with 22. Kane, 33, scored 73 times last season, the best haul by a footballer since Lionel Messi's 82 in 2011-12. Mbappe, however, ended the campaign without silverware.

Yamal insists that scoring volume alone should not decide the prize. “The Ballon d'Or should go to the best player in the world, full stop,” he said. “Not to a player who has scored 80 goals, because if you score 80 goals, you get the top scorer award for that. Those are two completely different things that people do not understand.” The comment appeared to be a dig at Kane.

His fate now lies in the hands of a jury of journalists from 100 countries. Nominated for the third time, Yamal finished runner-up to Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele in the 2025 race and has twice lifted the Kopa Trophy as the year's best young talent. To make history, he must surpass Brazilian great Ronaldo Nazario, who was 21 when he won the award in 1997.
